5 Quick & Easy Tips to Make Your Kids' Rooms Back-to-School Ready

The crisp feel of Autumn air, the smell of freshly sharpened pencils, the weight of a backpack slung over your shoulder – nothing conjures memories of childhood quite like the start of September. As your kids get ready to go back to school this week, it’s the perfect time to rethink how their bedrooms not only help them feel relaxed at home but succeed at school.

Luckily, you don’t need an entire redesign to get your kid’s rooms perfectly prepared. We’ve come up with 5 quick and easy ways to make their spaces back-to-school ready, helping them achieve their best year yet.

Establish a Space for Work

Studies show that a dedicated homework space at home can help kids focus on their work and thrive at school. We love the book desk and stool set from our friends at MADE. Don’t have room for a full desk? A fold-up desk – or even a low wall shelf – can make the perfect small-space solution.

Wherever their established workspace is, just don’t forget lighting – it can be the difference between deep focus and deep headaches. This cheerful yellow desk lamp will brighten up any gloomy moods.

Give them the right tools

The right tools can not only help your child to work more efficiently, but they can inspire them to aim high, stay organised and achieve their goals. Out at school, a quality, durable backpack can stick with them year after year (our pick is Fjallraven’s Kanken Kids), while at home, a chalkboard on the wall is the perfect place for them to puzzle out homework answers – we love this one in a cute cloud shape.

Notebooks and journals are the perfect blank canvas to foster your child’s creativity and allow them a special place to write with abandon. Papermash is our one-stop shop for beautiful stationery; this pink exercise book would look beautiful on a desk against the Sian Zeng Spring Wild Rain wallpaper!

Help Them Get Organised

Whether it’s efficient storage or a tidy desk space, a well-organised room is one of the easiest ways to get your kids back-to-school ready. Storage bags organised either by color (like these yellow ones from MADE) or by words (we love these from This Modern Life) make it easy for your kid to keep their rooms tidy throughout the year. Bookcases or shelves in fun, unique shapes -- such as a giraffe or even a pear -- can transform any room from grown-up to full of childhood whimsy.

A clutter-free desk or workspace will help keep their minds focused on the task at hand. But functional storage can still have personality: for example, a giant safety pin becomes a useful tape dispenser, or a robot or pencil sharpener holds all their writing utensils.

Inspire their creativity

School is about so much more than grades and homework; it’s about inspiring a child’s creativity, allowing them to explore, learn and grow. What better way to nurture their unique spirit quite like a whimsical, fun bedroom at home? Our Magnetic Mountains wallpaper is designed to stimulate storytelling and imaginative play, a perfect companion to our boy bear magnet heading back to school!

Catch their 40 Winks

Sleep is one of the most important factors in a child’s learning development – in fact, studies show that we process all of our memories and learning during sleep. Let them drift away on this dreamy cloud bedding set, and make sure their pillow is age appropriate with a new pillow from Beyond Bedtime.

How are you getting your kid's areas at home back-to-school ready?
